Clementine Churchill at the Hall

In 1940 Clementine Churchill attended at Woodford Memorial Hall and opened the first British Restaurant in England in South Woodford.  British Restaurants were set up so that people who had limited means and maybe did not have access to land to grow their own food during the war would be able to have a meal for a reasonable sum of money.  British Restaurants could be used by all members of the community and Dick Walker who attends St Mary’s Church remembers going to the restaurant as a small boy.  The government of the day based British Restaurants on a model put forward in the East End by Sylvia Pankhurst in 1919.  For more information please go to
